The President of the International Astronomical Union, Prof Dr Ewine van Dishoeck, visited Nigeria and Ghana on her way to the 100th anniversary of the solar eclipse in the island of São Tomé and Príncipe.

While in Nigeria she visited the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), where she addressed officials and stakeholders of the Nigerian space and astronomy community.

She was hosted in Ghana at the Ghana Planetarium, where a host of distinguished guests including the Nugua Mantse Chief Bortei-Doku and Queen Mother; H.E Mr Ron Strikker, the Netherlands Ambassador; H.E Dr Amarkai Amarteifio, retired Swedish Ambassador, Dr Mark SubbaRao, President of IPS (International Planetarium Society) and Dr Bonaventure Okere (West African Regional Office for Astronomy Development) gathered, according to a Facebook post by the African Astronomical Society.

Representatives from the University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute (GSSTI), students from the DARA basic radio astronomy training programme, schoolteachers and other astronomy enthusiasts also attended the event.
